The calculated LDA frequencies and their pressure dependence are in good agreement with the available Raman and infrared spectroscopy data. We also predict the pressure dependence of the modes which are yet to be measured. Thermodynamic properties are obtained using the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) to the free energy in conjunction with these results. The calculated P-V-T relations and thermodynamic properties agree well with the reported experimental data within the regime of validity of the QHA. The only discrepancies with experimental data that point out to intrinsic anharmonic effects are the mode Gruneisen parameters of 2 Raman and one infrared mode. However, their effect on thermodynamic properties appears to be negligible.

Structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of Mg2SiO4 and MgSiO3 minerals from first-principles simulations
In this paper we report a computational study of the structural and vibrational properties of the Mg-end members forsterite, wadsleyite and ringwoodite of Mg2SiO4, and akimotoite, majorite and the perovskite phase of MgSiO3. Our calculations have been carried out in the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT) using a plane wave basis set and the Projector-augmented Wave (PAW) method to acc...
متن کاملVibrational and thermodynamic properties of wadsleyite: A density functional study
[1] The vibrational properties of Mg2SiO4 wadsleyite have been calculated over a wide pressure range using density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Both the normal mode frequencies and their volume dependences are consistent with the available Raman and infrared data. We provide detailed information about vibrational properties that are still not experimentally available. The vibrational ...
متن کاملDensity functional study of vibrational and thermodynamic properties of ringwoodite
[1] Phonon dispersions and vibrational density of states (VDoS) of Mg2SiO4 ringwoodite have been calculated by first principles as a function of pressure up to 30 GPa using density functional perturbation theory. The predicted zone center frequencies are in close correspondence with existing Raman and infrared experimental data. The pressure dependence of phonon frequencies is linear and agrees...
متن کاملShock wave compression of singlecrystal forsterite
Hugoniot equation of state measurements have been performed on pure synthetic single-crystal forsterite (Mg•SiO4) in the pressure range 70-160 GPa (0.7-1.6 Mbar). These and earlier data for polycrystalline forsterite are compared with theoretical Hugoniots for the assemblages 2MgO (rocksalt) + SiO: (stishovite) and MgO (rocksalt) + MgSiO8 (perovskite). The densities attained by single-crystal f...
متن کاملSolubility of enstatite forsterite in H2O at deep crust/upper mantle conditions: 4 to 15 kbar and 700 to 900°C
Ten reversed brackets of aqueous silica concentration in equilibrium with enstatite (Mg2Si2O6) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) were determined at 700 to 900°C and 4.35 to 14 kbar. Silica solubilities were measured by a weight loss-weight gain method and by approaching equilibrium from higher and lower silica concentrations. Both single-crystal and fine-grained synthetic enstatite and forsterite starti...
